Montenegrin National theatre is the most prominent institution of culture in Podgorica, offering a variety of programmes to its visitors. With its institutional profile and its diversity of performances, Montenegrin National Theatre is recognisable not only on the cultural map of Podgorica and Montenegro, but also internationally.
On the Montenegrin National Theatre's website, it is stated that their mission is to promote, produce and stage drama and music from famous and lesser-known local and international artists. The theatre holds a special interest for contemporary drama to encourage emerging play-writes to showcase their plays, as well as other musical and performing arts pieces of special artistic value.
The Montenegrin National Theatre was founded in 1953 as a municipal institution called the Titograd Town Theatre with the idea to establish a strong institution that would function as a national theatre. From 1958 onwards, the theatre became the hub of Montenegro's theatrical scene after the decision to transform the town theatres of Nikšić, Kotor, Cetinje and Pljevlja into semi-professional ensembles. During this time, the theatre attracted the majority of established actors in Montenegro and always produced shows of the highest quality. In 1969, the theatre was officially awarded the status of a national theatre.
